The Lord God never nullifies or disbands His word to us. Though we may waver in our faith and obedience, He keeps it until all He perceived to accomplish through us is met. Hence, the Bible also asserts that His word is tested and tried. It never fails; He never allows it to fail. The simple reason being that He has chosen us in His Son for His glory. Through love He has brought us to Him. If He did it under any other trait, no believer would have any posterity left. His love carries His unfathomable grace, mercy and kindness. We often make mistakes and He forgives them, because He has already forgiven them in the cross. If one has committed a serious sin that too has been covered in the cross. One mistake committed does not eliminate a believer from the purpose and path God has planned and set for him. 1 Kings 15:5 says, “because David did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.”
Satan always fights with believers so that they miss the mark, deviate from God’s holiness. Yet, God has known it all the time and therefore, when we sin He graciously forgives. We may face consequences of that sin in the body, but only to be purified and built again. In fact, through consequences and grace He refines us into better people as one would refine gold. God granted David a kingdom and also promised it to the generations that would come through him. Yet, He did not take any of it away from him in his days when he sinned but kept His word. God knows full well our weaknesses and strengths and has planned all things according to them. If in weakness we strive to obey, He helps us become strong. Having a weakness does not automatically mean defeat, but when it is countered by obedience God adds His strength to make us strong. It is when we are unable to obey that weakness overtakes us. Our obedience will certainly reflect our faithfulness toward Him. The more obedient we are the more we accomplish for Him and the more honor He imparts to us. Faithfulness toward Him is directly dependant on obedience. Yet, as men we sometimes fail His word, commands and desire. And God still being patient toward us in Christ forgives us and brings us back into the path He first set us on. Hence, David never lost the blessing of God and remained a king as long as God appointed him.
The witness David carried in the above verse has a negative connotation on him and it implies that no man is without sin. As a believer who desires to please God and keep His ways, one may at a time or two lose his or her footing. Yet, know that God has covered it in His grace only to make him/her His child for eternity. This love of God is unfathomable. It almost seems too good to be true, but His love flowing in us establishes that His grace and mercy is upon us. Do not assume our sin makes God reject us perpetually. It is not for this reason He chose us in Christ. Had He not known our life completely beforehand He would reject us. But as such He knew it even before we were born. And He chose us, because in love He offered Christ in our stead. For understanding purposes consider the following. “Remember that my life is but breath; my eye will not again see good” (Job 7:7). [Job did not say it under sin]. Our condition may make us say it. It is by the suffering from guilt. Satan also exploits it so that we do not feel good about God’s forgiveness and are without confidence in His grace. Yet, the Scripture proves that it was not the case with David. On a good note to say that our eye will not see good again is a good indication that we have been saved and our salvation is true. It implies we are grieving in the Holy Spirit. God will accomplish what pertains to us.
Once we understand that God has forgiven or willingly forgives us and is patiently building us in Christ, the blessings reserved are beyond comprehension.
- Guidance. “He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity” (Prov. 2:7). By forgiveness He made us upright. Therefore, He pours out wisdom into us and keeps us in integrity. In every matter concerning our life He works exactly the same way as He did before. His leading us makes us realize that He has not changed toward us; neither has He revoked any of His promises to us. We act from His perspective, for we again begin seeing from His perspective. Our experience of rebuilding too will give us the sense of standing in obedience to Him.
- Rediscovering. God helps us rediscover our form toward obedience. “Thus says the LORD, ‘Take heed for yourselves, and do not carry any load on the Sabbath day or bring anything in through the gates of Jerusalem’” (Jer. 17:21). He again teaches us the ways for obedience. He trains us, works with us and replenishes us so that we become strong in obedience. He brings back to us the refreshing times of our earlier days. We attain the sense of belonging to Him. We begin to perceive His presence with us. Fear, guilt and sorrow quietly vanish in us.
- Remembrance. There will always be the remembrance of how God walked us out of trouble and into life. It will never leave us. “I have also spoken to the prophets, and I gave numerous visions, and through the prophets I gave parables” (Hos. 12:10). Since we heard and obeyed, all the avenues that God used to rebuild us have had positive effect on us. Furthermore, God too employs them through us for the sake of others.
- Understanding. We obtain the steadfast understanding that God is never against us. “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand” (Mark 3:24). We are His kingdom. He made us His kingdom through Christ and it is not at all His intent to lose us. The power of the blood of Christ is forgiveness and God has employed it for us so that we remain with Him perpetually. He works through us and for us and builds His kingdom so that it overcomes and rejoices. Being a part of His kingdom is all about overcoming the world and sin; for God has called it for that purpose.
- Realization. “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” (John 4:12). The Samaritan woman did not know at the moment, but we realize that there is none greater than Jesus our Lord. When she realized that He is the Christ and believed, she received forgiveness, and joy appeared in her. She received the life that God grants through Christ. Having reignited by that life we cling to Him more than we ever did. We understand the depth of His grace and mercy. Our joy will be untold, because not a hair belonging to us is lost. He brought us back into life and into the path and purpose He designed for us. All the things He said and promised concerning us still stand.
